In 2016–2017 MacBook Pros two kinds of cables fail here, each for a different reason. The backlight and camera cables are about 2 mm too short, so over time they break. The display (TCON) cables are damaged by dirt: hard particles get in through the vent, press into the cable and break its traces.

The panel itself was fine, so instead of replacing the whole display assembly I replaced the cables: two TCON cables plus the camera and backlight cables. The first and last photos show them before fitting.
